Edward Burtynsky’s work explores the theme of nature transformed through industry. He travels internationally to make vibrant photographs of places generally unfamiliar to the public—quarries, refineries, recycling yards, and mines. Here he captures an aerial view of a goldmining operation in Western Australia. The photograph is aesthetically beautiful yet its subject raises concerns about the impact of human beings on the environment. The artist explains: “These images are meant as metaphors to the dilemma of our modern existence; they search for a dialogue between attraction and repulsion, seduction and fear. We are drawn by desire—a chance at good living, yet we are consciously or unconsciously aware that the world is suffering for our success.”
