2018-2019 CAPP Committee Curatorial Statement
We, as a committee feel that the CAPP collection strives to promote the accessibility of contemporary art. The Stamp Student Union is a public space, visited by people whose experience with the contemporary art world varies dramatically. We want to welcome these students into the collection by showcasing work that is relatable and accessible to students of all perspectives and backgrounds. The CAPP collection also seeks works delving into deeper cultural issues, but we feel a balance between intellectual and accessible is of the utmost importance in constructing a collection that represents its viewers. We have purchased works that address the omnipresent sense of displacement caused by societal and environmental crises. Furthermore, we were interested in expanding the diversity of mediums currently in the CAPP collection. We specifically chose to include multimedia works that do not follow the traditional pass, such as sculptures in the round, video performances, happenings, and/ or light installations. In addition, as a committee our aim was to include diverse representations of people that allow for underrepresented voices to be heard. Authentic representation of our society and the environmental condition encapsulates the values of our collection. We have curated an exhibition that inspires persistence in the face of adversity, addressing the representation gap that exists in the art world and the adverse effects of the current environmental crisis.
