Diane Meyer, New Jersey VII, 2012

In The West I, New Jersey VI, and New Jersey VII, pixel structures embroidered onto personal photographs conceal details and reflect the way that photography can supplant memory by creating one-dimensional images that obscure particularities of the moment. Meyer also draws a connection between the gender-coded practices of cross-stitch and scrapbooking — responsibilities placed on women and seen as craft or domestic work, but shown here as integral to familial memory and affirmed to be as valuable as traditional high art mediums.
