Elena Volkova is a Ukrainian-American photographer based in Baltimore, Maryland. Volkova’s work engages with themes of liminality, subjectivity, and domesticity. Her process prioritizes connecting and engaging with her subjects in order to capture not only their likeness, but the essence of who they are. Through her use of tintype, one of the oldest forms of photography, she is able to capture deep shadows and dynamic portraits.
Volkova was commissioned by the CAPP Committee to work with the historically Black neighborhood of Lakeland, which is directly adjacent to College Park. The goal of this project is to create a living art archive of Lakeland today, through photography and visual storytelling. Volkova worked with the Lakeland Community Heritage Project and community leaders to connect with the community to create a participatory project. The involvement by the subjects shaped how it unfolded, and the subjects were invited to share stories in order to preserve the legacy of Lakeland in a meaningful, artistic way.
By capturing and connecting with a community that is experiencing intense gentrification to record their present moments, it ensures not only that they have a living archive, but also emphasizes the futures of the community. Many University of Maryland students are not even aware of the people who live in the neighborhoods that surround our campus, or their history. This project begins to bridge that gap with the community, connecting the campus to our neighbors.

Elena Volkova es una fotógrafa ucraniana-estadounidense radicada en Baltimore, Maryland. Su obra gira en torno a temas como la liminalidad, la subjetividad y la domesticidad. Su proceso prioriza conectar e interactuar con sus sujetos a fin de capturar no solo su imagen física, sino la esencia de su ser. Mediante el uso del ferrotipo, uno de los procesos más antiguos de fotografía, la artista logra capturar sombras profundas y retratos dinámicos.
El Comité CAPP encargó a Volkova un proyecto para trabajar con el barrio históricamente afroamericano de Lakeland, el cual se encuentra directamente adyacente a College Park. El objetivo de dicho proyecto es crear un archivo artístico viviente del Lakeland actual, a través de la fotografía y la narrativa visual. Volkova colaboró con el Lakeland Community Heritage Project («Proyecto del Patrimonio de la Comunidad de Lakeland») y con líderes comunitarios para establecer vínculos con la comunidad y así crear un proyecto de carácter participativo. La participación de los sujetos determinó el desarrollo del proyecto, quienes fueron invitados a compartir sus historias con el fin de preservar el legado de Lakeland de manera artística y significativa.
Al capturar y establecer vínculos con una comunidad que experimenta un intenso proceso de gentrificación, con el fin de documentar sus momentos presentes, no solo se garantiza la creación de un archivo viviente, sino que también se pone el énfasis en el futuro de dicha comunidad. Muchos estudiantes de la Universidad de Maryland ni siquiera son conscientes de las personas que habitan en los barrios circundantes a nuestro campus, ni de su historia. Este proyecto comienza a tender un puente para salvar esa brecha con la comunidad, conectando el campus con nuestros vecinos.
