Juan José Cielo is a Colombian American artist based in New York City. Cielo focuses on painting, photography and short films that speak on his Colombian heritage. His works envision a futuristic world that reflects his cultural background and experiences with his identity, viewing the future as the connection between where we come from and where we are going. His work challenges viewers to think about the present in relation to the future and the preservation of culture and places through time and change.
In Vendor and Flying Car, Cielo depicts a street vendor selling a snack to an unseen customer piloting a flying car. Cielo’s work brings a distant future to the present moment, marrying that which exists in the present to what will exist in the future. His work cements Hispanic culture and heritage firmly in the canon of a world that has not yet come to be, proudly stating that the Hispanic community has been here, is still here, and is not going anywhere. This lens of deviating from the art historical canon and challenging what cultural norms look like through works is mirrored in the 2015 acquisition by Derrick Adams, Game Changing (Ace). In Game Changing, Addams depicts a black figure as the face for the Ace of Spades. A card that does not traditionally have a face attached is made into a card representative of the black community’s fight to create space where there was none allotted to them. Vendor and Flying Car also discusses making space for communities that are often counted out of conversation, particularly as it pertains to co-creating a world for future generations.

Juan José Cielo es un artista colombiano-estadounidense basado en la ciudad de Nueva York. En su arte, Cielo se enfoca en pinturas, fotografía y cortometrajes que reflejan su herencia colombiana. Sus obras visualizan un mundo futurista que refleja su trasfondo cultural y sus experiencias con su identidad, concibiendo el futuro como la conexión entre donde venimos y hacia donde vamos. Su trabajo invita al espectador a reflexionar sobre el presente en relación con el futuro y la preservación de la cultura y de los lugares a través del tiempo y del cambio.
En Vendedor y Carro Volador, Cielo representa a un vendedor ambulante vendiendo refrigerios a un cliente invisible que pilota un carro volador. La obra del Cielo trae un futuro lejano al momento presente, uniendo aquello que existe en el presente con lo que existirá en el futuro. Su obra consolida aspectos de la cultura y herencia hispanas firmemente en el canon de un mundo que aún no ha llegado a existir, afirmando con orgullo que la comunidad hispana ha estado aquí, sigue aquí y no se irá a ninguna parte.
Esta perspectiva de desviarse del canon de la historia del arte y de desafiar la percepción de las normas culturales a través de las obras de arte se refleja en la adquisición de Game Changing (Ace) de Derrick Adams en 2015. En la obra, Adams representa una figura negra como el rostro del as de espadas. Una carta que tradicionalmente no lleva rostro se convierte en un símbolo de la lucha de la comunidad negra por crear un espacio donde antes no lo había. Vendedor y Carro Volador también aborda la creación de espacios para comunidades que con frecuencia se encuentran excluidas del diálogo, en particular en lo que respecta a la construcción conjunta de un mundo para las generaciones futuras.
