Letha Wilson is known for combining photography with industrial materials such as concrete and steel. Wilson cuts, tears, and shapes her photographs, pushing and pulling the prints into place and then encases portions of the composition in cement and steel. In Steel Face Concrete Bend (Kauai Kilauea Green), Wilson explores the material relationship between architecture and nature. With layers of concrete, Wilson’s work is a man-made contrast to the natural subjects of her prints, while the final texture of the piece refers back to natural terrains. The work slips between sculpture and photography in order to expand upon the restrictions of both media.
