Born in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico and currently based in Washington D.C., Paloma Vianey received her B.A. in art history from The University of Texas at El Paso and an MFA from Cornell University. Her work centers around her heritage as a Mexican woman, working to bridge the gap between Western, and specifically American perspectives on Mexico, in contrast to how she and other Mexican people view their own cities and culture. Chamarra Diptych (Observe and Reverse), is from Vianey’s Chammarra series. Her Chammarra paintings pay homage to her native city of Ciudad Juárez and its many landmarks and views, which are familiar sights to the inhabitants of the city. Depicting views of the cityscape enveloped in handmade zip-up sweaters, Vianey calls back to the familiarity of being enveloped in a warm jacket (chammarra), as well as suggesting the revelation or opening up of her city to the audience. With these paintings, she not only shares a part of her own lived experience, but the lived experiences of so many Mexican citizens. Her work aims to reclaim the narrative of Ciudad Juárez and Mexico more generally. Vianey hopes to foster more open and honest conversations about her heritage to an American audience that is generally exposed to narratives spread through social media, news, or film, which often paint Mexico and Mexican people in a negative light.

Nacida en Ciudad Juárez, México, y basada en Washington D.C., Paloma Vianey recibió su licenciatura en historia del arte en la Universidad de Texas en El Paso y una maestría en Bellas Artes en la Universidad de Cornell. Su obra gira en torno a su herencia como mujer mexicana, intentando tender un puente entre las perspectivas occidentales (particularmente estadounidenses) sobre México, en contraste con la manera en que ella y otros mexicanos perciben sus propias ciudades y su cultura.
Chamarra Diptych (Observa y Reversa) forma parte de la serie Chamarra de la autora. Las obras de esta serie rinden homenaje a su ciudad natal, Ciudad Juárez, y sus numerosos lugares emblemáticos y vistas, que constituyen un paisaje familiar para sus habitantes. Al representar vistas del paisaje urbano envueltas en suéteres tejidos a mano y con cremallera, Vianey evoca la familiaridad de sentirse arropado por una chaqueta cálida (chamarra), así como sugiere la revelación o la apertura de su ciudad ante el público. A través de estas pinturas, la autora no solo busca compartir una parte de su propia experiencia vivida, sino también aquellas de tantos ciudadanos mexicanos. Su arte tiene como objetivo reivindicar la narrativa de Ciudad Juárez y, más ampliamente, de México. Vianey aspira a fomentar conversaciones más abiertas y honestas sobre su herencia cultural ante un público estadounidense que, por lo general, se ve expuesto a narrativas difundidas a través de las redes sociales, las noticias o el cine, que a menudo presentan a México y a los mexicanos bajo una luz negativa.
