Pulling Back the Lace is part of Rachel Schmidt’s “Cairn Sounds” installation series and includes footage shot on a remote island in Scotland and soundscapes by Baltimore-based sound artist om.era.kev. The piece projects the landscape of the Isle of Skye onto an image of lace being pulled open by a pair of hands, revealing the video. Points of human interaction with the landscape, such as a television abandoned in a river or the presence of domesticated animals, appear “glitched.” These moments suggest that even a place as remote as the Isle of Skye has been impacted and distorted by human presence in nature.
