Shinji Turner-Yamamoto’s “sculptural paintings” emphasize a poetic reunion with nature by drawing connections between plant life and humanity, indicating ecological wisdom and the interconnectedness of life. Using natural materials such as pine needles, he adds new layers to the objects to emphasize their origins in the broader spectrum of time, as well as to mimic the spaces they once inhabited. Pentimenti Strata #9 also incorporates slag, a byproduct of the casting process. Turner-Yamamoto believes the slag shares specific physical characteristics with ancient geological objects such as fossils. When analyzing the slag carefully, he “began to see landscapes within them,” like the many minerals and fossils he has collected.
